This is one of my favorite redevelopment areas of the last 10 years. I have had the good fortune to be the planner for and to influence the design and setting of an entire neighborhood in that time.
In the photo are new single family dwellings built in the National Style during the Great Recession(!). They replaced dilapidated "old" 1960-70's ranch houses and filled in vacant lots in the Old Orland Historic District (period of significance: 1880-1920). These were some of the only single family homes being built in Orland Park's region at the time.
Today the Historic District is one of the best places to live in Orland Park for its style and inviting Midwestern architecture. The power of local champions and elected officials armed with a good Vision can do wonders– even in a construction and housing dearth.
